NZ ON THE CHEAP

KIWI airline Freedom Air International has released what it terms "rock-bottom" air fares to New Zealand. Until March 1998 skiers and other travellers can fly to New Zealand for $419 return.

The fare rises to $649 return ex-Sydney only during the Christmas high season.

Flights leave Sydney five times a week and passengers can go to Hamilton and Palmerston North on the North Island or to Dunedin on the South Island. Phone 1800 122 000 or contact your travel agent.

CULTURE PACKAGE

MELBOURNE is renowned for magnificent musicals and this October will be no exception when Jekyll & Hyde opens at Her Majesty's Theatre on October 25.

If you're in Melbourne at this time - and why not, it's at the height of the Spring Racing Carnival - take in the package offered by The Windsor Hotel.

For $436, guests get overnight accommodation, two Gold Circle tickets, champagne and a buffet breakfast. For booking details phone (03) 9633 6002.

THAR THEY BLOW

IF you've never seen the magnificent humpback and southern right whales making their way up the coast, make sure you do it this year.

Every winter up to 3,000 whales make their way up the coast to breeding grounds at Hervey Bay in Queensland.

Port Stephens is a great area to witness this journey and in June and July Peppers Anchorage Port Stephens is offering its Whale Watching Escape package.

Prices, from $154 per person twin-share from Sunday to Thursday, include one night's accommodation, buffet breakfasts, a four-hour whale watching cruise and a picnic lunch for two. Phone (049) 84 2555 or 1800 809 142.
